EV Maintenance 101: How to Keep Your Electric Motor and Controller Running Smoothly
While EV ownership eliminates engine oil changes, spark plugs, and carburettor cleanings, maintaining an electric vehicle still requires proactive care of high-voltage wiring, thermal dissipation, and brake linkages.
1. Keeping the Controller Heat Sink Clean
The motor controller handles peak currents up to 60A. Dust, mud, and debris clogging the aluminum cooling fins impede heat transfer, causing the controller to trigger thermal throttling. Gently clean the casing using compressed air or a soft dry brush.
2. Tire Pressure and Regenerative Braking Sensor Calibration
Ensure your front and rear brake lever switches click properly. If a sensor fails to engage, the motor will continue pushing current during braking, leading to unnecessary pad wear and wasted energy.
3. Charging Etiquette
Avoid charging your battery immediately after an intense high-speed summer ride. Allow the battery cells 20 minutes to stabilize to ambient temperature before plugging in your fast charger.
